— A Moore County man was arrested Saturday after a brief standoff with deputies in which shots were fired, authorities said Monday.

Hubert Monroe, 51, of 1410 North Ridge St., was charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer and one count each of resisting a public officer, second-degree trespassing and an order for arrest for harassing phone calls.

Deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Monroe when several shots were fired at them from inside his home, authorities said. A brief standoff ensued before he was taken into custody. The Southern Pines Police Department and the state Highway Patrol assisted with this incident.

I was in this guy's class all through school....haven't seen him since high school graduation. I remember him as a very quiet guy from a very troubled family. Very glad no one was hurt. Sad.....

If he truly fired on the officers, I'm surprised the hearse isn't picking him up.
