SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A woman and her adult son were displaced Tuesday morning when their home caught fire.

The home, located on S. Brightleaf Boulevard in Smithfield, suffered heavy damage as firefighters from three departments fought to extinguish the stubborn blaze. The woman and man were unharmed, but friends reported that they have no insurance to cover the loses.

At 8 a.m., firefighters were still battling the flames.

According to crews, the morning's cold temperatures caused water used by the firefighters to immediately freeze on the ground, creating an additional work hazard.

The NCDOT is on the scene spreading sand on the frozen roadway.
