Missing kayaker from Neuse River found safe at work

Clayton police and the Wake K-9 team were executing a water rescue on the Neuse River near Covered Bridge Road overnight, authorities said.

On Saturday, firefighters with the Archer Lodge Fire Department responded to a 911 call around 9 p.m. that a kayak and a canoe had both overturned in the river.

It's believed that the boats flipped because they hit a log underwater, officials said. According to the kayakers, the group first put in their canoe and kayak at Milburnie Road in Wake County and had planned to get out of the river in Johnston County.

A man, woman, child and two dogs were able to get back in the canoe and rescuers were able to pull them to the banks near the Riverwood neighborhood. Officials said the child, a young girl, was wearing a life vest at the time of the rescue.

A man and a woman were in the kayak, officials said. The woman was able to make it to shore, but 26-year-old Isaac Evans was reported missing.

Around 2 a.m., officials called off the search for the night, planning to re-group in the morning to continue searching for missing kayaker in Sunday's daylight.

The search resumed Sunday morning, and Evans was found safe and well on-land shortly after. According to authorities, he was not aware of the search efforts.
