SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Four people are recovering Monday, including two young children who were ejected from a SUV, after a single-vehicle crash in Smithfield.

Around 8 a.m., officials responded to a wreck at 2025 Wilson's Mill Road.

Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol say the SUV ran off the road, struck a ditch and overturned, ejecting two young passengers.

A 6-year-old was thrown from the vehicle, and a 2-year-old ended up in the car's cargo area.

Both children, the driver and another passenger were transported to a hospital in Smithfield with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said the children were improperly restrained.
