Military helicopters light up Raleigh sky

Posted February 27, 2013

— Strange figures lighting up the north Raleigh sky Wednesday evening were helicopters involved in a military training exercise, according to a spokeswoman for Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The odd lights in the area of Six Forks Road and Interstate 540 prompted numerous calls to the WRAL newsroom, as well as to Raleigh 911 dispatchers.

The low-flying aircraft aren't a threat to the public, an airport spokeswoman said.

Viewers also reported seeing the helicopters in the Four Oaks area of Johnston County.

And you'll be the first to cry if something happens and the military cant protect you because they never practiced over the city. I'm happy and proud they are out training, if they weren't than that would be a concern. And who's taking your guns? LOL. I know you need that automatic assault rifle with 30 rounds to protect your home from Obama right?

No all the folks out there that have no clue will cry not me! Got it! And as far as assault rifles no don't need them either, but I should have the right to get one if I wanted one. As happy and proud try working a shift where they fly over at 100 foot and wake you and the kids up! Not protecting from Obama but the other fools in power. Good luck to ya Jimmy

They fly around Swift Creek area south of Raleigh quite often. No big deal.

Practicing on the American public? And you want to take our guns! There is a noise ordinance for 11pm and they are in violation of that and many others. Amazing how you have so much of our tax dollars for fuel and fly time to practice over your own people!

Guys, the National Guard Apache helicopter base has been open at RDU for nearly 10 years. They've flown out pretty much daily since 2004 from there. It's no secret, there's even an observation deck open to the public. Just look for "National Guard Drive" at the Sheetz gas station on Aviation Parkway. No secret testing, if it were secret you wouldn't know about it.

Folks, there's a small Army/National Guard airbase AT RDU! It's been there for Nearly 15 years. It's no secret, the Sheetz gas station near the airport is on the intersection of Aviation Parkway and National Guard Drive. Those helicopters have been flying around Raleigh since the late 90's.

I'd like to call you all paranoid conspiracy theorists but the fact you haven't noticed them in over a decade of them flying DAILY out of RDU, I think I'll just call you all something else.

"The low-flying aircraft aren't a threat to the public"

I bet they are testing out the cameras where they can see if you go pee without asking the president first. They will be able to see right through your walls and see whatever you do.

Confirmed that military helicopters are still flying over NCSU's campus. Last saw one at 4:00 EST. It was definitely armed.
