RALEIGH, N.C. — Matthew Scialdone, who teaches ninth grade English and African-American literature at Middle Creek High School, was named the Wake County Public School System’s teacher of the year.

Scialdone was named during a banquet at the Raleigh Convention Center on Thusday.

“He is a fierce proponent of community support for our schools, and he is deeply devoted to ‘lighting a fire’ of passion for learning among his students,” Superintendent James Merrill said. “We salute Matthew for demonstrating excellence in his craft.”

Scialdone has taught at Middle Creek for 13 years. He has a master’s degree in literature from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s in secondary education from Appalachian State University.

Scialdone will now represent the county in the state teacher of the year competition.
