RALEIGH, N.C. — A robbery suspect ended up in the hospital early Tuesday morning after getting into an altercation with a Raleigh convenience store clerk.

Police said the robbery happened around 12:30 a.m. at the Circle K convenience store in the 2500 block of South Saunders Street. The suspect, identified as 51-year-old William Winston, entered the business and demanded money while implying that he had a weapon.

When officers arrived, though, they found Winston lying in the parking lot after the store clerk reportedly "subdued" him, police said. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Winston was charged with robbery, according to police.
