A man was taken to Duke University Hospital with serious injuries after he was struck by a vehicle on eastbound Interstate 40 in Cary.

State troopers said David Stallings was trying to retrieve a piece of an air-conditioning unit that had fallen off his truck when he was hit in the median by a car that swerved to avoid the equipment.

The accident, which happened just before 2 p.m., briefly shut down lanes in both directions on the interstate at Harrison Avenue and caused traffic delays.

Stallings was charged with a load securement violation. The driver, John Clark, was charged with a lane violation.
