Man sought in attempted rape in Raleigh

Posted June 28, 2012

— Raleigh police are looking for a man wanted in connection with the attempted rape of a 22-year-old woman last week.

The woman was riding a bicycle west on Stafford Avenue, near Cameron Village, around 2:30 a.m. June 18, when a man driving a small, dark SUV hit her rear tire as she approached the intersection of Stafford and Chamberlain Street, police said Thursday.

The man put the bike on top of his SUV and offered her a ride home, but instead, he drove less than a half-mile to Horse Track Alley off Clark Avenue and tried to rape her.

Investigators said the woman was able to escape but left behind the bicycle.

Police released two surveillance photos of the man and his SUV, although they did not say where the photos were taken.

He is white, in his 20s or 30s and has a medium skin tone and a muscular build. He is about 5 feet 7 inches or 5 feet 8 inches tall, has brown eyes and dark facial hair, and was wearing a dark-colored cap, blue shirt and white and blue shoes.

Investigators aren't sure what model the SUV is but think it could be a Ford Escape, Jeep Liberty or another similar four-door vehicle. They say it has gray leather seats and, although not new, appeared to be in good shape.

Anyone with information that might help police is asked to contact Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-864-4357. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for anonymous tips that help solves cases.

"Nothing good ever comes after midnight - be home, be safe."

I don't think everyone seems to understand that sometimes you have to be up after midnight. 22 years old likely means that she was in college, which requires late nights often. No, it was not smart to get in a car with a stranger, but can we please stop blaming the victim for once?

They wont post where the pictures were taken, but it is obviously the Harris Teeter right there in Cameron Village.

If someone hit me while riding a bike I think I'd be too mad to even CONSIDER a ride in the 1st place. Plus it's 2:30AM, no telling what kind of a person you're going to run into at that hour.

Who rides a big at 2:30am? Can women not be a little more responsible??

Where was he entering? If it's a store, did he make a purchase using a credit card? There can't be much going on in well-lit places like this one at that time of the night/day.

Nothing good ever comes after midnight - be home, be safe.

momma always said nothing good ever came from being out late at night...

please, PLEASE people...learn to use common sense. don't be stubborn and think "that'll never happen to me"...cuz it can.

It's probably not a good idea for a female to be riding her bike alone at 2:30am. So, what would make that awful idea worse? Getting into the SUV with a strange man you don't know, who probably was following you before offering you a ride home.

Don't be afraid to use some common sense!

Raleigh's finest can't determine the make and model of an SUV WITH a photo. Maybe they need to watch a little CSI.

What in the world would make you want to get in the car with a complete stranger at 2 in the morning? Its almost as if you are asking for something bad to happen to you!!! Glad she is ok!!
