Man shot by Fayetteville officer dies

A Linden man wounded last week during a struggle with a Fayetteville police officer died Thursday, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Linden man wounded last week during a struggle with a Fayetteville police officer died Thursday, police said.

Officer Bobby Cash and Police Specialist Heather Napieralski pulled over a car for a traffic violation on Oct. 17, police said.

When Cash approached the car in the parking lot of Sparky's Club, at 740 Bragg Blvd., a fight ensued. He fired several shots during the struggle, striking the driver in the torso, police said.

Gregory Paul Townsend, 45, was wounded in the shooting and had been in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center since then.

Both Cash and Napieralski have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of internal and  State Bureau of Investigation reviews of the shooting.
