RALEIGH, N.C. — A man was shot Tuesday afternoon at a shopping center off Capital Boulevard in north Raleigh, police said

The shooting occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. outside Plato's Closet, a consignment shop in the Poyner Place shopping center, on Old Wake Forest Road east of Triangle Town Center.

Demarcus Montice Brown, 37, was shot in the chest, but his condition wasn't immediately known. Police said someone drove the wounded man to a Raleigh fire station on Spring Forest Road, where he was taken to WakeMed for treatment of what police called serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

No one was in custody, but police said they did not believe the shooting was a random attack.

Shopper Paula Adeniji said the incident is especially difficult to handle on Christmas Eve.

"The person involved, the families involved have to deal with this at Christmas time, on Christmas Eve, when it's supposed to be a joyous," Adeniji said. "They have to deal with this, not knowing the outcome. It's just sad."
