CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A jogger on the Bolin Creek Trail in Chapel Hill Saturday morning found the body of a 24-year-old Fort Bragg paratrooper lying in the creek near a bridge where someone has set up a makeshift camp.

Rescue crews who responded to the creek around 9 a.m. pronounced Sgt. Shane Scott Pease dead at the scene, just north of the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Hillsborough Street intersection.

Police have not released a cause of death.

It's unclear whether the camp – which was set up with blankets, a chair and an American flag – beneath the bridge had anything to do with the man's death. Walkers on the trail said they've seen people go under the bridge to stay.

Pease, of Decatur, Mich., was an infantryman in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
