RALEIGH, N.C. — A man involved in a crash Sunday morning was arrested after police connected him with two different robberies.

Authorities said police responded to a call in the 4400 block of Capital Boulevard just before 6:15 a.m. after a woman reported she had been robbed after accepting a ride from an unknown man. After the woman got into the vehicle, the man produced a handgun and robbed her of cash, police said.

About a half-hour later, officers responded to a report of a man being chased by someone driving a black SUV in the 400 block of Boylan Avenue.

Authorities said that victim accepted a ride from the man driving the vehicle in the 3800 block of Capital Boulevard and the driver robbed him at gunpoint of cash and his wallet. When the victim exited the vehicle, the driver began to chase him until he noticed witnesses in the area and fled, police said.

At about 7:30 a.m., a vehicle driven by Christopher Shaquan Whitley, 20, of Wendell was traveling east on Interstate 440 when authorities said Whitley lost control and sideswiped a median barrier. The vehicle then veered to the right and stopped in the middle of the interstate.

Authorities said Whitley fled the crash scene on foot and was later located and arrested.

Whitley was charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of stolen property.
