RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday identified a man found dead in a tree in Willow Spring as Johnny B. Blackman.

Emergency workers were called mid-morning Monday to a home at 7316 Westworth Drive, where, the residents say, Blackman, 44, of Raleigh, had been cutting down a tree.

It's unclear how long he had been in the tree or how he died, but authorities said it appears his death was accidental.

A spokeswoman with the sheriff's office could not provide any further details about Blackman's death.

According to his obituary, Blackman served on the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for nearly 20 years and was employed with the North Carolina Department of Correction for two years.

He is survived by his wife and five children.

They will receive friends and visitors Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 7900 Ten-Ten Road, in Raleigh.

His funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
