Man fatally shot by Charlotte police officer

One man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a shooting involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer, officials said. The incident happened at around 1 p.m. on Justice Avenue when officers responded in reference to a suicide threat call for service, according to police.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a shooting involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer, officials said.

The incident happened at around 1 p.m. on Justice Avenue when officers responded in reference to a suicide threat call for service, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a man holding a hunting rifle. The officer perceived the man to be an imminent threat and fired his service weapon.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Both the officer and the deceased man were white.

Per department protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
