CARY, N.C. — A Raleigh man was indicted on an upgraded charge of kidnapping this week in connection with a sexual assault last month in Cary.

Adrian Atwater, 34, of Grove Wood Drive, was arrested Oct. 21 on charges of second-degree kidnapping, second-degree sexual offense and felony strangulation in the case.

A Wake County grand jury on Monday, however, returned a true bill of indictment of first-degree kidnapping, in addition to the other two charges.

Cary police say Atwater allegedly held another man hostage in his home for about eight hours and physically and sexually assaulted him.
