Man drowns in lake at former Pittsboro quarry

Posted July 17, 2014

— A man died Wednesday night while swimming in a lake at a closed quarry in Pittsboro, authorities said.

Jarrell Octavious Thigpen, 20, was with two friends at Sugar Lake at about 6 p.m. when he went under the water and didn't resurface, authorities said.

Divers found Thigpen but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at UNC Hospitals, authorities said.

Sugar Lake is privately owned and not open to the public, they said.

if you taught them well then don't expect them to tell you at 20yrs old they're going swimming. sorry but i'm failing to catch the part these boys did that was such an unwise decision. accidents happen. it's a sad shame. but don't be so shallow to think it couldn't have happened to your perfectly raised, flawlessly wise decision-making expert darlings too

Just wondering if the parents knew where their sons where. Of course they are grown, or think they are. But look how they put a dark cloud over their parents. Who wants that? I am a parent and I hope my daughters continue to make wise decisions. Also I taught them to learn from their mistakes.

I remember when this lake was open to the public - it was a fun place to hang out in the summer.

Man used to have some good times there. Half of UNC was out there on weekends.

Since it is illegal, maybe the sheriff depart. should keep an eye out and arrest or give a citation if anyone is caught swiimming there or trespassing.

Sugar Lake can be dangerous. I had a friend fall off the cliff trying to climb back to the top and landed on me. Almost broke my neck!! Its also illegal to swim out there.

so sad. Makes me realize how lucky some of us are that these things didn't happen to us when we were in our 20s...sure could have.

    condolences to family and friends
