RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man faces charges that he supplied alcohol to teens who were involved in a Sunday crash that killed three men.

Vicente Rivera Montero, 26, is charged with five counts of aiding and abetting, being over the lawful age to purchase alcohol and giving it to a person under the age of 21, authorities said. He was being held on $10,000 bond and a detainer on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because of questions about whether he is in the country legally.

ICE asked that Montero be held for them based on probable cause that he lacks legal status.

According to officials with the State Highway Patrol, the three teens, Carlos Gomez, 19, Erick Avila, 18, and Juan Gomez, 17, were near the Forestville and Buffaloe roads at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

The Highway Patrol said Carlos Gomez lost control, over-corrected and slid sideways into an oncoming SUV.

A mother and child in the SUV were transported to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.

Timothy Mabrey, a friend of the Gomez family, said the family and friends are taking it hard.

"They were open hearted, would do anything for everybody. They never harmed anyone ... I cry every night because they were like a brother to me, both of them, all of them, and I cry myself to sleep at night because I know how hard it's going to be missing them," Mabrey said.

Montero, of 5717 Riverford Drive in Raleigh, purchased Corona and Modelo for the young men at a convenience store on Buffaloe Road, according to an arrest warrant.

Two other minors at the party also consumed the alcohol, authorities said.
