Man charged with arson in fire at grandparent's house

The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office said that a 911 call was placed by homeowner Alice Matthews just before 6 a.m. to report a fire at 114 Indigo Avenue.

Matthews reported that she and her husband, Don Leggett, were woken by their smoke alarms and located a fire in their grandson’s bedroom.

Matthews and Leggett were able to escape the fire, along with five other residents of the home, authorities said.

Matthews’ grandson, Shameir Laiquan Wright, was not found inside the home and was later located at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, where he checked himself in for treatment.

Authorities said Wright, 20, admitted to setting the fire in his bedroom before fleeing through a window and walking to the hospital.

Wright was being held Friday under $30,000 secured bond.
