FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man was charged Thursday in connection with the death of a 62-year-old who was found beaten inside his Fayetteville home and later died.

Jeffrey Ander Brewington was discovered Friday around 9:30 p.m. in his home in the 2100 block of Goins Drive. According to officials, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department found Brewington after receiving a call requesting a well-being check.

Brewington died Sunday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Authorities said several missing items from Brewington’s home led them to believe the incident stemmed from a robbery.

Matthew J. Smith, 41, of the 3900 block of Welmont Drive was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection to Brewington’s death.

Smith is also facing charges of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods for an April 25 incident along the 2300 block of Oklahoma Drive and charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and injury to personal property in connection with an April 26 robbery at the Tobacco Road Outlet at 2897 Owen Drive.

Smith was taken into custody Thursday and taken to a local hospital for evaluation for an unspecified medical condition that was unrelated to his apprehension, police said.
