— A shark bit the leg of a man off of the coast of Beaufort Inlet on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The man, whose name was not released, was swimming with friends in about 70 to 80 feet of water when he was bitten.

He was taken to Carteret General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency officials said he will likely need surgery. No one else was injured.

I was on the boat (Sea Jule)... its my dads boat and we went out fishing for the day, when we were on our way back and miles away from any wreck (we made sure of that), we decided to hop in the water to cool off. We checked the sonar too to make sure there were no bait pods or anthing like that around us. All of us, except one person was in the water. We heard Donnie (the victim) say "something bit me". I hopped out of the water to see at least six sharks circling the boat and the other people. The one i managed to get a glimpse of was a bull shark, at least 11ft in length. We then rushed to Beaufort inlet which was approx. 30 miles away from where we were fishing and we were met by the police boats there, esccorted to the morehead waterfront and the EMS met us there and took Donnie (the victim) to the hospital. He did not jump on top of the shark. And we thought he was kidding when he said he got bit, not he thought we were kidding. I just want to get all of those facts straight.

At least he wasn't too seriously injured.

Second bite off the NC coast.

Gotta be careful out there, especially if you're baiting the water when standing in it.

Interestingly, WRAL has another article about the shark bite that actually has the details.

If the man was fishing means he had bait fish, well the shark took him as bait. Makes a lot of sense when you are fising and you jump in the water and wonder why you got bit by a shark. Sharks live in the water people....wake up!

caniarrestu, lol! The color might be a point, though, in the water a whitish leg can look like a fish's shiney underbelly, where a darkish leg wouldn't reflect as much light. :)

I've read reports that he was out that far fishing, jumped in to cool off and described it as "landing on the shark"

The Carteret County News-Times reports that 54-year-old Donnie White of Lexington, S.C. was on a family fishing trip Thursday afternoon about 7-10 miles offshore when he jumped out of the boat and into the water to cool off. Officials say the White described it as "landing on the shark."
