ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Rocky Mount police have charged an 18-year-old man with shooting a 13-year-old boy at a Delphia Drive house in February.

Trae Hakeem Crandell was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a stolen firearm. He was being held in the Edgecombe County Jail Wednesday.

The victim is recovering, police said Wednesday.

Police said that although it initially appeared that the shooting might have been accidental, they decided to file charges after further investigation and consultation with the District Attorney's Office.

Crandell has a single previous conviction for resisting an officer in 2008, according to state Department of Correction records.
