CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Police have charged a man accused of stripping in the parking lot of East Chapel Hill High School on Friday.

Brian Eugene McLaughlin, 29, was arrested on charges of indecent exposure and trespassing in the alleged lunchtime incident. He was in the Orange County jail Friday afternoon under a $500 bond.

East Chapel Hill High School Principal Eileen Tully said in an e-mail to parents that McLaughlin had no connection to the school and was immediately identified as a stranger when he entered through the “Quad A” entrance.

A school resource officer asked him to leave, and when he was in the parking lot, he stripped and asked that he be arrested or taken to a hospital, Tully said.

“Obviously, this is a highly unusual circumstance and one that we wish could have been avoided,” she added. “East Chapel Hill High School takes school security seriously and will continue to make every effort to ensure the safety of our students.”

She credited the school’s locked-door and ID badge policies, which limit the number of school entrances, in helping staff identify him and remove him from the campus.
