Mail boxes set afire in coastal communities
Mail collection boxes in Havelock, Newport and Morehead City were set on fire Sunday, damaging the mail inside, the U.S. Postal Service said Monday.
Posted — UpdatedThe Postal Service was able to identify the recipient, the sender or both for most of the 1,200 or so pieces of mail affected. A few pieces of mail were destroyed, so no information was obtainable, officials said.
The identifiable mail was being repaired and placed back into the mail stream on Monday with a letter of explanation. Notices about the incidents were placed in the lobbies of the three post offices.
The mail boxes were in front of the post offices at 133 U.S. Highway 70 in Havelock, 337 Howard Blvd. in Newport and 3500 Bridges St. in Morehead City.
Any customers with questions about mail placed in any of the three boxes are asked to contact the recipient to see if it was delivered or to call their local postmaster.
Area law enforcement agencies are working with postal inspectors to investigate the arsons.
