Lumberton police officer dies after motorcycle wreck

A Lumberton police detective died Monday of injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident Sunday, authorities said.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Lumberton police detective died Monday of injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident Sunday, authorities said.

Duane Hunter crashed on McRainey Road off of U.S. Highway 301 near St. Pauls at about 12:30 p.m. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said he was thrown from his motorcycle after losing control in a curve and hitting a sign.

He was traveling 45 mph in a 55-mph zone and was wearing a helmet, according to the Highway Patrol.

Hunter, who oversaw the SWAT team for the Lumberton Police Department, died at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
