LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Lumberton police officer handling an accident on Interstate 95 Tuesday morning was struck by a car, authorities said.

Officer William Reed was responding to a motorcycle accident in the median of I-95 near mile marker 10 shortly after 8:30 a.m. The driver of a northbound Toyota Avalon lost control of the vehicle, which veered into the median and hit the officer, authorities said.

Reed was taken to Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton with two broken legs and was later transferred to University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. His condition is unknown.

The motorcyclist was identified as Eric Andrew Meyers of Delaware. He was airlifted from Southeastern Medical Center to UNC Hospitals, but his condition is unknown.

Joseph Serafini of Florida, the driver of the Avalon, was charged with exceeding a safe speed and failure to reduce speed, authorities said.
