Lucky fair-goer gets $55,000 in unclaimed cash

Posted October 19, 2012

State Treasurer Janet Cowell visited the North Carolina State Fair on Friday to give $55,000 in unclaimed cash to one lucky resident.

The check went to Jan Schnurr, who received the money from an unclaimed certificate of deposit set up for her by her mother years ago.

“My reaction was, ‘Oh my goodness,’” Schnurr said.

When she got the check, she realized she had forgotten all about the CD.

“I wish it were something I’d never known about," she said. "Then I’d really feel wealthy, I guess.”

There is more than $340 million in unclaimed property in the state, according to a statement from Cowell’s office.

Did Cowell give an update today on the amount of state employee retirement money she lost by investing in 618,000 shares of Facebook at $38 apiece?

What is that now.. about $12 Million Cowell lost on one gamble..

Janet, I think the State Treasurer is supposed to save and gain money not throw it away on foolish investment choices.

    We should re-elect you why?

Cowell is running for office and this definitely made her look good. Of course she was on the job when she attended the fair. Too bad she did not bring lots of checks for lots of people!

I'm glad the state treasurer has nothing better to do than go to the state fair and hand out checks that could have been mailed. The Treasurer's Office must be on cruise control.

But understandable, in an election year there's very little photo-op in mailing checks.

I wonder if Cowell got paid taxpayer money to go to the fair?
