Lucky fair-goer gets $55,000 in unclaimed cash

State Treasurer Janet Cowell visited the North Carolina State Fair on Friday to give $55,000 in unclaimed cash to one lucky resident.

The check went to Jan Schnurr, who received the money from an unclaimed certificate of deposit set up for her by her mother years ago.

“My reaction was, ‘Oh my goodness,’” Schnurr said.

When she got the check, she realized she had forgotten all about the CD.

“I wish it were something I’d never known about," she said. "Then I’d really feel wealthy, I guess.”
