APEX, N.C. — An Apex man, known in the area for his splendid Christmas lights, is now using his social media influence to help Ukrainians flee their homes safely.

People right here in the Triangle are also tapping social media to create a worldwide network to help Ukrainians.

The man, who goes by MG, has a Facebook page for his holiday lights display with nearly 27,00 likes.

"When people start sharing our message, we reach out globally to places we never thought we'd go," MG said.

Like his latest post on Facebook. The frequent flier businessman is offering to use his airline points to sponsor flights for Ukrainians escaping the war so they can reunite with family anywhere in the world.

"To me, it’s almost like Christmas year round, the fact that we can utilize our platform to reach out not only to our local people but globally to help families in desperate need."

He's not alone in harnessing the power of technology to support Ukraine.

Konstantin Khait lives in Cary after leaving Russia in 2014.

"Many people in Russia don’t support the war," he said. "We don’t support the invasion to the Ukraine."

He helped create the website "Russians for Peace" to build a community of ex-pats around the globe who are against the war.

"We want to say we are normal. We are not guys who are standing for war," he said. "We are standing for peace."

They're sending that message through social media, from the Triangle to the world.

"Do not let the magnitude of what’s happening discourage you from getting involved, and you’d be amazed how much of a difference you can make by getting involved and helping even just one family," MG said.

MG has already been in touch with several people who are trying to reunite with relatives who got out of Ukraine to neighboring countries. His post now has more than 700 shares.
