DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham school bus got snagged on a utility pole guide line Tuesday afternoon, causing the pole and live wires to fall on the bus, authorities said.

Bus 126, which was carrying 17 students from Burton and Harris elementary schools, was trying to turn around on the 400 block of Lakeland Street near Mathison Street when it struck and got caught in a guide wire, said school system spokesman Chip Sudderth.

The impact pulled the guide wire from the ground, causing the pole and power lines to lean down onto the bus.

Duke Energy was called to the scene and the power lines were turned off as a precaution.

Then, all the children got off the bus safely, police said.

Some of the students took a backup bus home and others were taken to Burton Elementary School to be picked up by their parents, Sudderth said.
