ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A team of demolitions experts from Fort Bragg headed to Halifax County Friday night after a teen mowing grass found live ammunition there, the sheriff's office said.

The demolition experts blew up the ammunition, according to Halifax County sheriff's officials.

Authorities closed down part of Easton Street in Roanoke Rapids and evacuated three homes after the discovery.

A sheriff's office spokesman said the boy found a zipped bag in the grass at about 4:30 p.m. Inside, he saw a hand grenade, a canister grenade and some shotgun shells.

Deputies who responded to the scene found the ammunition to be live and called Fort Bragg.
