Marcia Spencer is next in our Made by Mom Gift Guide, your guide to unique gifts made by local moms (and one dad). Spencer is a mom of two in Raleigh and owner of Small Beans.

Spencer grew up watching her mom sew. And she's spent her life creating things too. She always figured her hobby would always stay just that: a hobby. She never saw it as a career.

If she'd known then what she knew now, she probably would have studied fashion design, she says today.

Five years ago, Spencer started making bibs for her infant son because standard bibs wouldn't fit around his chubby little neck. But her passion for creating things for young kids exploded two years later with the birth of her daughter, who she calls her muse.

"That's when  I kind of went crazy," Spencer tells me.

Today, Spencer designs and creates clothes and shoes for both boys and girls. She's more than happy to make them in adult sizes too. Her custom creations include little T-shirts for boys with ties on them, shift dresses for girls and adorable shoes and slippers for boys and girls, and much more.

Her work can be found at local boutiques, including Raleigh's Babiology, NOFO at the Pig and Beanie + Cecil Baby, along with her shop on Etsy. Her pieces range between about $20 and $40 a piece.
