— A Camp Lejeune Marine and a soldier from North Carolina have died in Afghanistan in recent days, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Marine Staff Sgt. Javier O. Ortiz Rivera, 26, of Rochester, N.Y., died Tuesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, officials said.

Rivera was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Army Pfc. Christian M. Warriner, 19, of Mills River, was among five troops from Fort Campbell, Ky., who died Sunday in Kunar province when insurgents attacked their unit with small-arms fire, officials said.

Warriner was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

God Bless this Marine and Soldier who gave their all. May the Lord be with their families in this time of need. Staff Sergeant Rivera has 3 young children so I pray for strength of the wife to help her through this painful time.

As a girlfriend of a Marine who has been to Iraq just like "mikeyj" said there is also a lot of good stuff as far as bad stuff going on but the media doesn't like to show that.

    Semper Fi! OohRah!

@Worland: Great observation! I am a MARINE vet. My oldest is ARMY vet and my 2nd son is National Gaurd. We watch this stuff often. I live in Jacksonville. My son was in Iraq when Sadom was captured and again for the votes. He was an O R tech and has PTSD from all the erauma he witnessed. He wants to go back because he saw the "good" stuff happening and watched the Iraqi interpreter come out of her veil because of freedom. The news never reported those stories. You are right. they announced deaths daily. I personally believe it was the medias attempt to make the war "unpopular" with AMERICANS, thus making the bushes unpopular.
Being in the military town, I still often hear of good things.
With the 3 of us being military we are sickened by the way the current CIC is handeling things . An example is not listening to his leaders in country requesting a certain number of bodies.

@Worland: Strange...it's not televised hourly like it was before. Durning the past administration, it was constant.

I am glad people come here an comment with thoughts and prayers. I see these guys/gals where I volunteer, coming home from deployment, going home for a final family visit before deployment, just joining...they are really great people.
