YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. — A company that makes electronic components began laying people off Friday as part of its plan to close a factory in Youngsville.

Flextronics announced in October that it would shut down the plant by April, putting about 480 people out of work.

Company officials said 96 people were let go Friday after their shifts ended.

Flextronics, an international conglomerate based in Singapore, chose to close the plant after acquiring a competitor, Solectron, last fall. Solectron already had two facilities in the Triangle, employing several hundred people.

The company had been the largest private-sector employer in Franklin County.
