Lawmakers Would Put Safe Surrender in High School Health Education Curriculum

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Under a bill passed Wednesday by the state House of Representatives, health education for high school students will include instruction on the state’s baby-abandonment law. The measure now moves on to the Senate.

North Carolina’s Safe Surrender Law allows a parent to lawfully abandon a new born baby with a responsible person, preferably at a hospital, church or law enforcement center. The child must be younger than 7 days old at the time.

North Carolina is one of 35 states with a form of surrender law.
