Lane closures on I-40E slow traffic through Raleigh
Two of four eastbound lanes of Interstate 40, between Harrison and Wade avenues, have been closed for construction this weekend.
Posted — UpdatedThe left lanes of I-40 East will be closed between the Harrison Avenue exit in Cary to the Wade Avenue split in Raleigh. The lane closures began at 9 p.m. Friday and will last until 6 a.m. Monday.
Traffic sensors showed that traffic moving slowly from around Aviation Parkway, and vehicles were traveling at about 20 mph in the construction zone.
The work is part of a project to widen 6.2 miles of I-40 from Wade Avenue to the Jones Franklin Road bridge. Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2011.
The Department of Transportation suggested the following detour for eastbound motorists:
- Take Exit 283 onto Interstate 540 East.
- Follow I-540, then get onto to U.S. 64 Bypass West.
- Merge onto Interstate 440 East back to I-40.
