KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A Knightdale man was accidentally shot earlier this month when his dog knocked a gun off of a kitchen counter, according to a search warrant released Wednesday.

John Sidney Daniels told police that he was shot in the knee on Jan. 15 when his dog jumped onto the kitchen bar where his loaded handgun was placed. The dog knocked the gun onto the ground, and it went off, striking Daniels in the right knee.

Daniels called his sister, who took him to the Wake County Medical Center, the warrant states. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

The warrant states that Daniels said he and his dog were the only ones in the home at the time of the accident.

Authorities seized a handgun and ammunition from Daniels’s home during their investigation, according to the warrants.
