PRINCETON, N.C. — Vandals knocked over and smashed a marble statue of Jesus in a Wayne County cemetery during the weekend, authorities said Tuesday.

The vandalism occurred late Saturday or early Sunday and was discovered by a cemetery worker, said Elliott Futrell, a co-owner of Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, 3888 U.S. Highway 70.

Futrell said the Italian marble statue was put in place when the cemetery opened in 1963. It was valued at more than $20,000.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
