HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A 26-year-old Hope Mills man has been charged with physically abusing his 1-year-old child.

Nathaniel Pascarella, of 333 Masters Drive, is charged with felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Investigators said Pascarella was responsible for several contusions and bruises on his child's body.

Medical testing at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center revealed the child suffered a broken rib and acute subdural hematoma, which is a collection of blood outside the brain. Doctors at Duke University Hospital discovered multiple subdural hematomas of different ages, contusions to the head, a healing rib fracture, bruises around the eyes and extensive retinal hemorrhages.

Pascarella was in the Cumberland County jail Thursday under a $150,000 bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
