RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police continue to investigate the cause of the Monday wreck that killed North Carolina State University basketball star Lorenzo Charles, according to search warrants filed Friday.

A charter bus driven by Charles ran off Interstate 40, traveled through a grass shoulder, across an on-ramp and into a wooded area. The wreck report states the bus then struck several trees and went back across the road before stopping.

Investigators believe the bus did not have a mechanical malfunction, although police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said that hadn't been definitively ruled out.

Police seized the bus' black box and two cell phones found at the scene of the wreck, the warrants state.

Police asked anyone who saw the wreck to contact them.

Charles is most famously remembered for his game-winning dunk in the 1983 NCAA championship game in which the Wolfpack defeated Houston.
