JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A father has been charged with driving while impaired after his daughter was pinned under a car following a Saturday night wreck in Johnston County.

Officials say Anthony Scott Cerda was heading north on N.C. Highway 96 when his Jeep went off the right side of the road. He then overcorrected, crossed the southbound lane, went into the woods and overturned.

Officials said his two children were in the car, one a 5-year-old boy and the other a 14-month-old girl. Troopers said a Jeep rolled on top of the girl, pinning her to the ground.

According to reports, the father first got the boy out of the car and then began searching for his daughter. Both children were rushed to WakeMed.

Cerda was charged with DWI, misdemeanor child abuse and felony inflicting serious injury by motor vehicle. He was being held under $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Authorities said the 5-year-old boy was treated at a local hospital and released, while the 14-month-old girl remained in serious condition.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation, and anybody with information is asked to call Highway Patrol at 919-733-3861.
