In case of Kittrell family shooting, bond conditions will dictate future relationships

The relationship between a man, his mother and his son will be limited by the court should he make bond, Judge Reuben F. Young decided Tuesday.

Peyton Woodlief, 49, of 74 Tucker Lane in Franklinton, is accused of helping his 11-year-old son shoot and kill the boy's grandfather, Woodlief's father.

An investigation determined that Woodlief argued with his father, 84-year-old Lloyd Woodlief, on July 7, and the older man shot him. The boy responded by shooting his grandfather, who died.

Peyton Woodlief is being held under $150,000 bond in the Vance County jail on charges of felony aiding and abetting second-degree murder, misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon in the presence of a minor.

Should he be released on bond, prosecutors in the case asked that he be prohibited from contact with the boy or with his own mother, Frances Woodlief, who is the victim's wife.

Judge Young, noting that the 11-year-old is a co-defendant in the murder case, agreed to the prosecution's request.

Deputies said Lloyd Woodlief shot his son with a .22-caliber long pistol, and then his grandson responded, shooting the older man with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Peyton Woodlief is being treated for his gunshot wound while he is in custody, authorities said.

During his court appearance Tuesday, he appeared to have difficulty walking.
