RALEIGH, N.C. — A former North Carolina State University football player is facing charges after police say he threatened current NC State head coach Dave Doeren on social media this week and has done so in the past.

Joseph Boletepeli, who played defensive line for the Wolfpack in 2018 and 2019 before transferring to Maryland, was charged with communicating threats and stalking, both misdemeanors.

The arrest warrant issued by Wake County says that Boletepeli posted a tweet on Twitter on Nov. 14th that stated: "Imma get him I promise. Dave Doeren and the rest."

Boletepeli, 22, was also charged with misdemeanor stalking and resisting a public officer. During his arrest, Boletepeli pulled away to avoid being handcuffed by officers, according to warrants.

This is not the first time Boletepeli has posted threatening messages on social media, according to the warrant. Investigators said Boletepeli went to Doeren's place of work several times and also sent threats through text message and social media to Doeren.

The most recent tweet came just one day after three current University of Virginia football players were killed and another injured in a shooting in Charlottesville. A former Virginia football player has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and many other charges in the case.

Sources tell WRAL that the the shooting at UVA, coupled with the multiple threats Doeren had received from Boletepeli, were the impetus to involve police and avoid more potential risk.

NC State also increased security at its football complex, the Murphy Center, this week, sources told WRAL.

The warrant states that "the defendant knew or should have known that the harassment ... would cause a reasonable person to suffer substantial emotional distress by placing that person in fear of death, bodily injury, continued harassment, fear for the person's safety or the safety of the person's immediate family (and) close personal associates.'

Boletepeli is from Raleigh and played three seasons at Millbrook High School and his senior season at Heritage High School. He graduated from Heritage, where he was coached by former NFL players Dewayne Washington, Torry Holt and Willie Parker.

Boletepeli played in seven games for the Wolfpack, three in 2018 and four in 2019. He played in four out of five games for the Terrapins' in their COVID-shortened 2020 season. He did not play college football in 2021 or 2022, but previously reached out to NC State about returning to the program, sources told WRAL.

NC State has not commented on the arrest or incidents.

Boletepeli was on house arrest Friday wearing an ankle monitor, according to court documents.

Doeren is in his 10th season at NC State, which plays at Louisville on Saturday.
