DURHAM, N.C. — All nortbhound lanes of Interstate 85 in Durham have reopened following a fatal, chain-reaction crash Tuesday afternoon that prompted the closure of the northbound lanes for at least three hours, authorities said.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. Christopher Knox said in a statement that Bonita Cherease Williams, 51, of Durham, was killed when her 2000 Saturn was struck from behind by a 2011 Ford van, driven by Timothy Louis Journigan, 37, of Wake Forest.

The impact of that crash pushed Williams' car into a 2010 Toyota Prius, driven by Susan Lynn Chase, 47, of Winston-Salem, Knox said. Chase was not hurt during the incident, authorities said.

Williams' 9-year-old grandson, a passenger in her car, was rushed for medical treatment to Duke Regional Hospital, but his condition was not immediately available, authorities said.

Journigan was also transported for medical treatment to Duke Regional, but his condition was not immediately disclosed, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near Exit 182 at Red Mill Road. Investigators said the crash resulted when Journigan did not slow down and struck Williams' car. Authorities said Journigan has been charged with failure to reduce speed and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

The crash snarled traffic on I-85 for several hours while troopers investigated the incident.
