DURHAM, N.C. — An 84-year-old Durham man who has been charged with trying to kill his wife blamed voodoo for the shooting.

Warren Haywood Moore was charged after his wife, 84-year-old Nezzie Carter-Moore, was shot in the chest and face with a .38-caliber handgun on New Year's Eve, police said.

Moore told investigators his wife had been practicing voodoo and cast a spell on him.

Carter-Moore was taken to Duke University Hospital, but there was no word Wednesday on her condition.

Moore was being held on a $50,000 bond at the Durham County Jail.
