RALEIGH, N.C. — A Clayton man sought in the Thursday morning shooting death of his wife outside a west Raleigh apartment building has been arrested, police said Friday.

Johnston County deputies arrested Michael Rashun Sutton, 42, and turned him over to Raleigh police, authorities said. He was charged with murder, attempted murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling and felony breaking and entering and was being held without bond at the Wake County jail.

Tonya Lashawn Sutton, 39, was gunned down at an apartment complex at 2413 Wesvill Court, off Lake Boone Trail near Rex Hospital.

In a 911 call released Thursday evening, a man said Tonya Sutton was at his apartment when Michael Sutton fired several shots at his door. Tonya Sutton ran outside, where Michael Sutton shot her, the man said.

Police found her body on a sidewalk at the complex.

Residents who were shaken up by the shooting Thursday said the arrest gives them the chance to return to their normal lives.

"The police and investigators, they did their job, and I'm feeling more comfortable right now," Frize Mouassa said.

"The fact that this happened so close to home is not very comforting. It's just frightening," Maria Cruz said.

Property records indicate the Clayton house where Michael Sutton was arrested, at 50 Valleyfield Drive, is owned by his wife.

Fernando Orozco said the couple had an elementary school-aged daughter and a happy home.

"It has been all positive. Nothing indicated there were any problems with the marriage or anything," he said.
