Holly Springs man charged with DWI in fatal pedestrian crash

Holly Springs police said a 20-year-old man was driving drunk late Saturday when he struck a pedestrian who later died.

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Holly Springs police said a 20-year-old man was driving drunk late Saturday when he struck a pedestrian who later died.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. at the intersection of N.C. Highway 55 and New Hill Road in Holly Springs.

Police said Darrius Cortez Gilbert, 20, of Pyracantha Drive in Holly Springs, struck Jesse Lemar Lawrence, 33, of Holly Springs. Lawrence died early Sunday at WakeMed.

Gilbert was charged with driving while impaired and driving after underage consumption of alcohol.
