DURHAM, N.C. — An 18-year-old Hillside High School student was arrested Monday after he brought a loaded .45-caliber pistol onto school grounds, according to the Durham County Sheriff's Office.

Kelvin Thomas Owens, of 4 Savi Court, was arrested about 9 a.m. A sheriff's deputy saw him acting suspiciously with a group of young men off campus, according to the sheriff's office.

When Owens returned to school a short time later, he smelled of marijuana and was searched by school administrators and deputies, who found a loaded Hi-Point JHP .45 caliber pistol, authorities said. No one was hurt.

Owens was charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and was being held in the Durham County jail under a $5,000 bond. He is also on probation for a Sept. 19 conviction of breaking and entering into a vehicle and larceny, according to the sheriff's office.
