Highway work near Bragg unearths possible artillery shells
Construction crews working on Interstate 295 in Cumberland County uncovered what authorities believe are three 155-millimeter artillery shells, Fort Bragg officials said Wednesday.
Posted — UpdatedMilitary police, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and the Fort Bragg Fire Department have established a safety boundary to the area, and officials closed the Yadkin Road Access Control Point.
"What the D.O.D. team has found so far is that the devices have no initiating device inside," said Fort Bragg Public Affairs Officer, Thomas McCollum. "They have a shipping plug, therefore they're relatively safe. They've been in the ground for about 10 to 20 years."
Traffic was diverted onto Filyaw Road while crews worked to remove the artillery rounds. Yadkin Road was reopened around 4 p.m.
