HENDERSON, N.C. — Police are looking for a suspect in connection with the shooting death last month of a Henderson man.

Lajohn Champion, 22, is wanted for first-degree murder in the Oct. 20 shooting of Gregory Welfare, 25.

Welfare died at a local hospital. Champion was also shot in the incident and was treated.

Police on Monday tried to arrest Champion in connection with the shooting, but he escaped.

Another man, Darnell Macon, 23, of 3299 Epsom Rocky Ford Road, Louisburg, was arrested Monday in the case. He is charged with first-degree murder. Macon also faces a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon after police say they found a .40-caliber handgun when he was arrested.

Police consider Champion to be armed and dangerous and urge anyone with information about where he might be to call 911, a local law enforcement agency, the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141 or Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.
