CARY, N.C. — As a result of heavy rain, a surcharging manhole at the Walnut Creek Pump Station, 1100 Buck Jones Road, resulted in an approximately 7,000-gallon spill at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, officials said.

The untreated waste reached a Walnut Creek tributary to Lake Johnson; no fish-kill was observed. The heavy rains prevented clean-up efforts, and the rain event naturally flushed the area, officials said.

The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 48 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters. Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
